For some reason they get four special units (Tosa get two, Choshu and Jozai and Satsuma one, the rest zero) though one of them is just a renamed line infantry with identical stats. White tigers are actually pretty decent and will win you battles even late in the game. All the other clans have to rely on levy infantry which suck. I find that they can be really tough to play as at first because everyone wants to invade them and kill all their ports.Īizu: one of my favorite clans because their white tiger force is pretty decent. Not super useful because their heal rate in enemy lands is really slow, and they still get attrition in winter. Jozai: their troops can heal in enemy lands. Basic line infantry with kneel fire are already so overpowered that they don't really need buffs. Nagaoka: their accuracy buff is not noticeable. They're in a tricky position near a lot of aggressive clans. Obama: their +2 to repression is pretty useful, it makes it easier to take other provinces and move on. I find they're the hardest clan to play as, at least at first. Tsu: their traditional army buffs aren't that useful. One of them is a sharpshooter unit and I don't like sharpshooters because they don't get kneel fire. Tosa: same as Satsuma, they have two special units but nothing special. They're expensive but they don't take attrition in winter months so you don't get stuck not wanting to move around in winter. They have better trade access from the start of the game but it doesn't make them automatically rich, and other clans will catch up with their trade access.Ĭhoshu: I really like the kihetai. Artillery is already so overpowered that a slight accuracy buff isn't noticeable. Satsuma: nothing really special, they have one special unit but it's pretty meh. If you do this as any other clan, the AI might refuse to sally out the first couple turns, but definitely will one or two turns before the automatic surrender. I'm pretty sure the AI doesn't even realize this, a lot of times you can besiege a castle and the AI won't sally out to attack you, and you just take over the city automatically without a fight. Sendai are one of the easiest clans to play as in general, their siege perk lets them starve out castles way quicker than other clans. If you're Sendai all you have to do is take over what's north and west of you to start, then move south taking over everything. So if you're Satsuma or Saga all you have to do is take over Kyushu then everything to the east/north. You'll be at war with everyone so you won't have a coalition of allies there to hold down a bunch of provinces on your side. If you want your Republic campaign to go easier, then it's best to start somewhere where you're expanding in one direction to take over Japan, rather than two. Of course, this doesn't mean the other Clans are incapable of expanding into the corners as well, they'll just have a more difficult time doing so. These clans include the Satsuma Clan, Saga Clan, and Sendai Clan, as they lie on the outskirts of Central Japan. The best clan for a Republic Campaign actually consists of any Clan that can expand into one corner of Japan and thus only need to focus on one side for the rest of the Campaign, rather than fighting two fronts. While Pro-Imperial Clans can accept a British Trading Port, and Pro-Shogunate Clans can accept a French Trading Port everyone can accept an American Trading Port, and I think it's the only option for Republican-aligned clans. Pro-Republican clans actually lose access to an agent, having no counterpart to the Imperial Ishin Shishi or the Shogunate Shinsengumi, with any previously recruited agent of these types deserting a clan that switches it's allegiance. Republican Guard Cavalry (Sabers).Īll three sides get a better Line Infantry Variant and Elite Line Infantry Variant, with no stat differences between the three sides (except Shogunate Infantry gets 5 more ammo than everyone). Pro-Imperial clans get Imperial Guard Cavalry (Carbines). Pro-Shogun clans get the Shogitai (Katana Infantry), Shinsengumi (Melee-focused Line Infantry) and Shogunate Guard Cavalry (Lancers). No clan gets any special boost from going along the path of the Republic, actually.
